Participate in this unique Summer Intensive opportunity with Chicanx scholars, artists, and archivists from July 24- August 4, 2023, at UCSC. Students can even apply for a fellowship!

This 2-week Summer Research Intensive invites students to work with archivists, artists, and scholars to focus on the digitization, interpretation, and preservation of the extensive personal archive of queer Chicanx filmmaker, poet, and artist Dr. Osa Hidalgo de la Riva. The de la Riva archive is a collection of documents, films (35mm, VHS, etc), artworks, etc., reaching back to the 1960s held by Santa Cruz-based filmmaker Osa de la Riva who established the “mujerista” approach to filmmaking. Students will collaborate with the Maria Cotera from Chicana por mi Raza Digital Memory Collective (CPMR), a post-custodial digital archive documenting the rich history of Chicana feminist praxis in the 1960s and 1970s through an oral history and archival collection initiative. Additional instuctors include Prof. John Jota Leaños (UCSC), Teresa Mora (UCSC), Linda Garcia Merchant (University of Houston), and Rebecca Hernandez (UCSC).

Students will explore the history and development of Chicana Feminism and its intersection with the arts, politics, and LGBTQ activism in the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. The first week of the Tutorial will be structured around a series of guest lectures, film screenings, and skill-building workshops. In the second week of the Tutorial, students will apply what they have learned as they work directly with digitizing and cataloging Osa Hidalgo de la Riva's personal archive.

Please send questions to Teresa Mora (tmora1@ucsc.edu) and/or Prof. John Jota Leaños (jleanos@ucsc.edu).
